SRI AMAN: A total of 100 bird cages were put up for a contest during a bird chirping and singing event dubbed ‘Mini Bon Seni Suara Suara dan Gaya Burung Murai’ held at Recreation Park of Taman Desa Indah, here in Sri Aman.

All the 100 cages were displayed as contest items by participants from Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Simunjan, Betong, Saratok, Sarikei, Mukah, Kapit and Bintulu according to the Neighbourhood Watch Committee (KRT) chairman of Taman Desa Indah, Wan Alek Wan Jaya.

“This display and contest is aimed to attract the interest of the younger generation in keeping different species of magpie or murai (long tail) birds that are now close to extinction in Borneo island.

“With this event, I believe the younger generations are more aware of the need to safeguard and protect the habitat of the murai bird species so that the future generations will continue to enjoy their existence and presence,” he said.

Wan Alek also said the event could become a platform for the community members to share hobbies and at the same time would help to create more opportunities for them to interact and have rapport with each other, especially among youths.

“Anyway I hope event such as Bird Chirping and Singing Contest could be revived to inculcate better awareness of safeguarding and protecting the natural habitat of birds here,” he stressed.
