SIBU: A total of 1,000 senior citizens in the Pelawan state constituency received a donation of one kilogramme of minced pork in conjunction with the forthcoming Chinese New Year celebration through a programme held at Rejang Park Commercial Centre here on Saturday.

A portion of the minced pork was also donated to the Sibu Benevolent Society.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee said the donation was given to voters, aged 60 and above, as an effort to ease the burden on senior citizens affected by the rising cost of living.

“We are aware that the cost of living is currently increasing and the elderly are among the groups most affected.

“Therefore, it is hoped this contribution will help and allow them to experience the joy of celebrating Chinese New Year,” he said when met after the donation distribution ceremony.

Tiang, who is also Pelawan assemblyman stressed that the initiative is not only aimed at helping in terms of daily needs, but also as a sign of concern and an effort to share joy with the local community in conjunction with the festive season.

“My team will continue to go down to the ground and move to several stations around the Pelawan constituency to meet the people and distribute some blessings in conjunction with this celebration,” he said.

In addition, Tiang also announced that the Pelawan state constituency Chinese New Year Open House will be held on the second day of the celebration on Feb 18, from 11 am to 1 pm, located at Unicity, Jalan Wawasan here.

“This year, the celebration is being held on a larger scale and we invite all levels of society regardless of background to come and enliven the event,” he added.
