KUALA LUMPUR: The prestigious Malam Wartawan Malaysia (MWM) 2025 and Hadiah Kewartawanan Malaysia MPI-PETRONAS 2024 will be held today at The Majestic Hotel here, with over 1,000 guests expected to attend.

Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, will officiate at the event.

Among the confirmed guests are veteran journalists, editors, media practitioners and corporate partners.

The event, organised by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), is also supported by PETRONAS, the main sponsor of the annual journalism awards.

MPI Chief Executive Officer, Ainol Amriz Ismail, said this year’s edition includes an exhibition, highlighting the institute’s legacy and the history of the Malaysian Journalism Awards.

“This exhibition is meant to recall key moments, and the role MPI has played in upholding journalistic excellence in the country,” he said in a statement.

Ainol, who also co-chairs the event, added that one of the key highlights will be the launch of MPI’s first-ever ‘Journalism e-Journal’ by Zambry during the ceremony.

“The e-Journal reflects MPI’s efforts to empower academic writing among journalists, particularly in journalism, media and communication studies,” he said.

A total of 23 categories will be awarded during the night, with gold award winners receiving a trophy, certificate and cash prize.

Silver and bronze winners will receive certificates and cash prizes.

Backed by PETRONAS’ sponsorship worth RM450,000, this year’s awards saw a strong response with 549 submissions from 58 media organisations across the country, including Sabah and Sarawak.

In addition to the competition categories, MPI also received nominations for three special recognition awards to honour journalists for their lifelong contributions.

To promote ethical journalism, the event will also feature a signature campaign in support of media integrity, with guests encouraged to sign a canvas display before entering the hall.

“I urge all guests to support this campaign and sign the canvas. Let’s stand in solidarity to support ethical and principled journalism,” Ainol said.
