KUCHING: Authorities have seized a total of 11 modified motorcycles and issued 65 summonses during a joint operation held in the city over the weekend.

Codenamed ‘Op Samseng Jalanan’, it was conducted from 10 pm on Jul 19 until 6 am the next day, and involved 48 traffic police officers and five officers from the Department of Environment (DoE).

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the operation was held at Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub, Jalan Astana, and Masja area, with aim to curb street racing activities and ensure compliance with traffic laws and regulations.

“During the operation, 11 motorcycles were confiscated under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for being structurally modified from their original design and for further inspection.

“A total of 40 individuals and 34 motorcycles were inspected, resulting in 65 summonses issued for various traffic offences.

“Meanwhile, the DoE issued compounds to six motorcyclists whose bikes exceeded the permitted noise limits,” he said.

Alexson added that such operations will be carried out from time to time, and the public are reminded to always drive responsibly, avoid engaging in street racing, and refrain from modifying their vehicles.

“Reckless driving or riding can endanger not only the road user but also others,” he said.
