KUCHING: Eleven illegal immigrants, including an agent, from Indonesia were arrested by army personnel from the 4th Regiment Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) on Tuesday night for entering the country illegally.
Its Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Mohd Nizam Masri said the suspects, who tried to enter Sarawak from Jagoi Babang, Indonesia, were detained by his men who were carrying out ‘Ops Awas’ in KTJ Serikin at 10.00pm.
He said based on the information they received, the illegal immigrants, from Jawa Tengah, had boarded a flight to Pontianak before attempting to enter the country through the Sarawak-Indonesia border with the help of an agent.
“One of the illegal immigrants said the reason that they entered Sarawak was to do business in Serikin. The suspect also said if they managed to secure a job in the state, they had to pay the agent 1 million Rupiah,” said Mohd Nizam.
He added that the suspects, who failed to produce any valid travel documents, were handed over to the immigration officers in Serikin for further action.
