MIRI: A 12-door workers’ quarters at Woodman Estate Liku, Kuala Baram, was completely destroyed in an early morning fire today (Aug 8).

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received a distress call at about 3.40 am and sent personnel from Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station to the scene.

The blaze involved a non-permanent structure measuring approximately 144ft by 24ft and destroyed the entire building, with the damage estimated at 100 per cent.

No casualties were reported.

Firefighters, however, faced an access challenge as the site could only be reached via a river route. The team had to wait for the ferry service to resume before it could proceed to the location.

At 4.13 am, Lopeng 03 reported that the ferry service was operating, allowing the team to continue its journey.

The firefighters arrived at the scene at 4.35 am and brought the fire under control at 4.42 am.

They then carried out overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and to prevent any rekindling.

A total of eight personnel from Lopeng Fire and Rescue Station took part in the operations, using one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and one Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle.

The operations were led by PBK I Robinson Anyie Danyin.

The cause of the fire and the value of the losses have yet to be determined.
