KUCHING: Twelve graduates from Kampung Haji Baki, aged between 60 and 81, have successfully completed the Adult Literacy Programme.
They were participants in the programme, completing their studies from September 2024 to February this year.
Sarawak State Library (Pustaka) chief executive officer Japri Bujang Masli said that the graduates’ achievement proves that age is not a barrier to gaining knowledge.
“I am very proud of their spirit and dedication in improving their reading, writing, and arithmetic skills.
“Pustaka is always committed to providing access to knowledge and lifelong learning opportunities for all members of society.”
Japri said this during the graduation ceremony for the programme at the Pustaka building here on Tuesday (Feb 25).
He added that the objective of the Adult Literacy Programme is to promote reading literacy among communities in need.
“For the implementation of the programme, Pustaka will collaborate with public libraries, village libraries, digital community centres, and assemblymen/women to ensure the programme is carried out comprehensively across Sarawak.
“As part of efforts to enhance literacy levels and support lifelong learning, the Pustaka Adult Literacy Programme team has developed a special module to teach the 3Rs (reading, writing, and arithmetic) while also helping to improve the living standards of adults in need.”
Meanwhile, Japri stated that the Project Platform for Resources Optimisation and Sharing to Promote Empowerment and Resilience (PROSPER) aims to support the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030) under economic prosperity.
“PROSPER benefits not only students, professionals, and researchers but also the general public who wish to gain knowledge and improve their quality of life.
“Therefore, this portal emphasises concepts and strategies to achieve a digital library in every home.
“I am confident that with this project, Pustaka will become a leading force in developing an inclusive and sustainable digital literacy and lifelong learning ecosystem in the state.”
At the same event, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony was held between Sarawak Information System Sdn Bhd (SAINS) and Pustaka for PROSPER.
