KUCHING: Twelve students from Kuching South will travel to Guro, South Korea from Mar 30 to Apr 4 under a city-led exchange programme aimed at strengthening international ties and youth development.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the initiative serves as a platform for students to gain global exposure while building cross-cultural understanding.
“This programme is more than just a visit; it is a meaningful learning experience that allows our students to immerse themselves in a different culture, interact with their peers and represent Kuching South on an international stage,” he said in a press release.
He noted that the exchange is conducted under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between MBKS and Guro City, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering international friendship and youth engagement.
Under the arrangement, the programme is held on an alternating yearly basis, with students from Guro visiting Kuching South one year and local students travelling to South Korea the next, ensuring sustained collaboration between both cities.
During the visit, the Kuching South delegation is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on the Mayor of Guro, participate in a youth interaction session at the Cheonwangdong Youth Cultural Center, and engage in cultural and educational activities.
Wee said the programme also aligns with MBKS’ ongoing commitment under the UNICEF Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI), where Kuching South is currently recognised as a candidate city.
He added that such initiatives reflect the council’s efforts to nurture globally aware, confident and socially responsible young citizens.
Meanwhile, the participating students expressed appreciation for the opportunity, describing the trip as a meaningful experience to learn beyond the classroom while representing Kuching South internationally.
