MIRI: Police here seized 12 motorcycles and issued 34 summonses during a four-hour overnight operation targeting illegal street racing.
The operation, conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters, ran from 11pm on Jan 24 until 3am the following morning.
It covered several hotspots, including Tanjong Lobang, Piasau, Marina, Tudan and the Miri Bypass.
A total of 18 men and 15 motorcycles were inspected during the operation.
Police said the enforcement action resulted in 34 summonses for various traffic offences.
Twelve motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further investigation and action.
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation forms part of ongoing enforcement efforts to curb dangerous riding behaviour and street racing activities, which pose a serious risk to public safety.
He warned that similar operations would be carried out regularly and without notice.
Motorists, particularly motorcyclists, were urged to ride responsibly, avoid reckless behaviour and refrain from participating in illegal street racing.
Police also cautioned against unauthorised vehicle modifications, roadside gatherings that obstruct traffic flow and activities that create excessive noise and disturb public order.
ACP Mohd Farhan further reminded parents, vehicle owners and guardians that they could be charged under Section 26(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 if they allow individuals without valid driving licences to operate vehicles.
Offenders, if convicted, face a fine of up to RM2,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both.
Police reiterated that strict enforcement would continue to ensure road safety and maintain public order in the district.
