SARATOK: Narcotics police here struck hard in the fight against drugs, hauling 13 locals to the Magistrate’s Court in a single day.

Saratok police chief DSP Mathew Manggie said the cases were heard before Magistrate Intan Nurul Ferena Zainal Abidin yesterday (Dec 22).

“Eleven individuals charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, pleaded guilty to the offence.

“Meanwhile, two others were charged under Section 12(2) of the same Act,” he said.

Those charged under Section 15(1)(a) for drug abuse, may be fined up to RM5,000 or jailed for a term up to two years, or both, and placed under supervision for two years under Section 38B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Offenders charged under Section 12(2) for drug possession, face a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both.

In light of this, the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) will continue implementing ‘Ops Tapis’ to stamp out drug activities in the district.

Mathew stated that intensified enforcement follows firm directives from Sarawak police leadership to eradicate drug trafficking, abuse and distribution completely.
