KUCHING: A total of 1,312 new teachers will be placed in schools across Sarawak for the opening of the 2025/2026 Academic Calendar session.
State Education Department (JPNS) director Omar Mahli said the new teachers are hired on contract.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) and the Education Service Commission (SPP) for assisting us in addressing the teacher shortage issue in Sarawak.
“For example, I have been informed that 30 new teachers will be placed at SK Jalan Haji Baki.
“So Alhamdulillah, the issue of teacher shortages in Sarawak is improving and becoming more stable,” he said when met by reporters after visiting SK Jalan Haji Baki here, today.
On another note, Omar said the new teachers have been given 30 days to register themselves as soon as possible, starting from Feb 13.
“We also understand that some of them were previously employed and have submitted their resignation notices to their respective employers.
“This may take some time for them. For instance, some from Kuching have been placed in Baram, Belaga, and Kapit.
“So, they need some time to arrange their travel, find housing, and so on. However, we hope that all of them will report for duty soon,” he added.
Meanwhile, Sarawak has a total of 1,460 schools in operation, comprising 194 secondary schools and 1,266 primary schools.
The 2025/2026 school session started on Feb 17 and will run until Jan 11, 2026.
