KUCHING: Sarawak is taking decisive steps toward establishing itself as a global semiconductor powerhouse, with the strategic findings from the Sarawak Semiconductor Syndication Session set to be presented to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Aug 14.

Held recently, the high-level syndication session brought together 50 key stakeholders from federal and state ministries, government agencies, industry players and academia to refine the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030.

Participants were divided into three focus groups; Industry Development, Innovation & Technology, Talent Ecosystem Development and Sector Enablers & Sustainability to evaluate ongoing initiatives and co-design strategies aligned with Sarawak’s ambitions in the electrical and electronics (E&E) sector.

SMD Semiconductor chairman Datuk Seri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar commended the participants for their contributions and stressed the importance of ensuring the roadmap remains grounded in practical, results-oriented strategies.

“This roadmap marks the beginning of a transformative journey for Sarawak’s semiconductor industry.

“As we move forward, it is critical that our strategies remain actionable and our goals realistic. Only then can we truly shape Sarawak’s position in the global semiconductor space.”

He added that among the session’s major outcomes were the identification of 14 core strategies aimed at strengthening the semiconductor ecosystem, accelerating sector growth, and driving high-value economic activities.

“A strong emphasis was also placed on developing the talent pipeline through continuous training, upskilling, and robust industry-academia collaboration to meet future workforce demands.

“On the technological front, stakeholders agreed to push for strategic R&D, product and intellectual property (IP) development, and integration of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance competitiveness.

“Other focal points included enhancing local value creation through IP commercialisation, boosting support for ancillary industries, especially in materials and packaging, and improving government support mechanisms, such as funding, incentives and talent-centric policies, to attract global players and grow local capabilities.”

Meanwhile, SMD Semiconductor CEO Shariman Jamil said the upcoming presentation to the Premier represents more than a policy milestone, but rather the formal activation of Sarawak’s semiconductor blueprint.

“With all stakeholders aligned, we are moving forward with greater unity to position Sarawak as a serious player in the global semiconductor value chain.

“The establishment of the Sarawak Silicon Longhouse will be one of our cornerstone initiatives to catalyse infrastructure development across the value chain.”

Jointly organised by SMD Semiconductor, the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), and the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), the session builds on momentum from the Premier’s launch of the Sarawak Semiconductor Strategic Framework and the Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030: Beyond Moore’s Law, which took place at CSA Catapult in Wales on April 29.
