SIBU: A total of 148 flood victims from Kampung Sentosa here received food basket assistance from the State Welfare Department yesterday (Feb 7).
The handing over ceremony held at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sentosa was officiated by Bukit Assek assembyman, Joseph Chieng Jin Ek. Also present were State Welfare director, Semawi Mohamad, Sibu welfare officer, Tang Kee Lee, Sibu Resident’s representative, Nur Syarmilla Jerius and acting Sibu District Officer, Chambera Ali.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chieng said he felt sad that the flood has caused water to enter many houses and even to the bedroom with water level as high as one foot.
He cautioned the residents to be alert as the phenomenal weather would continue for another week according to the weather forecast.
“We need to be alert at all times especially during the flood, there might be some reptiles like snake, etc, and safeguard our own safety,” Chieng said, adding he together with his team would continue to go down to the ground to monitor the flood situation.
Meanwhile, he pointed out that the Sentosa flood mitigation plan phase one is in the process of designing by the State Drainage & Irrigation Department (DID).
Chieng said he has been informed that the project would be completed by April.
“But I am afraid that it will be delayed a bit because of the heavy rainfall, flooding and so on. Thus, it will take a longer time. Anyway, we still need mitigation plan phase two in order to really tackle the water management issue in the area.
“I really hope that the Sentosa residents could bear with us as during the project construction, it will certainly cause difficulties and inconvenience such as the traffic flow,” Chieng further said.
