SARATOK: A large dead saltwater crocodile was recovered from Batang Krian during multi-agency operations to reduce the reptile population and safeguard riverside communities.
The incident happened at around 4:00 pm, Tuesday, after residents of a longhouse reported that one of the baits placed along the river had been taken.

Acting on information, the team tracked down the crocodile and brought its carcass ashore on the third day of the 10-day operation.
Saratok Police Chief, DSP Mathew Manggie, said the reptile died after consuming bait set along the river.
“The crocodile has been identified as a male saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) measuring about 15 feet in length and weighing an estimated 300kg to 400kg,” he added.
“Its carcass was kept at the operation centre before being handed over to a licensed crocodile hunter to be properly recorded.”
He further said that the crocodile operation, conducted from December 14 to 23, is a joint effort involving Saratok District Police Headquarters, the Sarawak Forestry Corporation and other government agencies.
The operation was focused mainly around Kampung Kupang and the upper stretches of Batang Krian.
Earlier monitoring estimated nearly 178 crocodiles in the area, prompting intensified efforts with a total of nine baits placed along the river.
