KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Micro-Mobility E-Scooter has made its debut at the Student Centre of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak here.

The launching of operation of the e-scooter project by Beam Mobility Malaysia was officiated by the UiTM Sarawak rector Datuk Dr Jamil Hamali.

The project saw the deployment of a total of 150 e-scooters around the Campus 1 and Campus 2, with sixteen parking spots where students can conveniently find the e-scooters.

It received approval for its realisation following a collaboration with the UiTM Sustainability Unit, Business Development Unit (Strategic Business Unit Beam) and UiTM Green Centre (UGC).

Jamil said the project is one of the campus’s initiatives to enhance the quality of its students’ mobility by building a micro-green transportation platform that uses electricity in an effort to achieve the 11th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).

“Aligning with the 11th SDGs, Sustainable Cities and Communities students and staff in the campus can practice a healthy and active lifestyle through a micro-mobility with an e-scooter beam,” he said.

Meanwhile, UGC coordinator Dr Nursyazwani Mad Sofwan said the initiative is an example of a smart campus that takes a stand to invigorate a decrease in the rate of carbon consumption in the university.

“We replace fuel consumption with electricity and it is beneficial to students since they are not allowed to bring cars, except those who are living outside campus. Thus, the provision of this e-scooter can reduce travelling time from hostel to campus.

“Students will also have new leisure activities and mobility that make them more active. Also sometimes when there is a constraint, especially hot weather, it may be a bit difficult for students to go anywhere,” she said.

The use of micro-green mobility not only supports the goals of the SDG but also makes it easier for students and the welfare of students at UiTM is highly emphasised.

UiTM Mukah is next to be introduced with the technology to provide convenience for its students.
