KUCHING: Over 1,500 newly-appointed teachers in Sarawak will commence their duties in the state by mid-January next year.

State Education Department (JPNS) director Omar Mahli said that of the more than 12,000 candidates who were screened, 1,500 candidates were selected to meet the placement needs.

He said 300 new teachers would be placed in secondary schools while the rest would serve in primary schools.

“These teachers successfully passed the recent interview process and will help address the shortage of educators, especially in the rural and remote areas.

“The Education Service Commission (SPP) has completed the interview process and the results have been given to the successful candidates.

“The candidates have received their results and the Ministry of Education (KPM) is now coordinating their placements through the e-graduation system,”he said.

Omar revealed this after paying a courtesy visit to  Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg  at his Wisma Bapa Malaysia office yesterday  in conjunction with his appointment as the new director of JPNS.

As the new  JPNS director, Omar emphasised his commitment to strengthening the relationship with the Sarawak government, particularly through the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD).

“We intend to foster closer cooperation with the Sarawak government and related agencies through more frequent engagement sessions.

“This is important to ensure that educational policies and new programmes are well understood and accepted by the community,” he said.

Omar, who previously served as the deputy senior director of the Daily School Management Division (BPSH) in the Ministry of Education, replaces Datuk Dr Azhar Ahmad, who retired last November.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Premier and the state government for their support of JPNS’s efforts to advance the education sector in the state.
