KUCHING: Sixteen foreigners were arrested when immigration enforcement officers descended on two construction sites around the city on Wednesday.
The operation, conducted by 35 officers from the Sarawak Immigration Department, started at 9:00 am, and involved the screening of 113 foreign workers, comprising 107 Indonesians and six Bangladeshis.
Sarawak Immigration Director, Abdul Halim Abang Naili, said the sweep was part of a coordinated effort across the country to tighten enforcement and stem the tide of illegal migration.
“Of the figure, 16 Indonesians, including five women, were taken into custody for overstaying and lacking valid travel documents.
“The detainees are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63,” he said.
Abdul Halim added that the department would continue stepping up such enforcement efforts to ensure strict compliance with immigration laws and to protect national security.
He also encouraged members of the public to report any information on undocumented migrants through official channels or to the nearest Immigration Enforcement Office.
