MIRI: Around 1,600 participants turned up for the ‘Run for Peace 2025’ event here on Sunday, part of a nationwide initiative by Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) to promote peace, unity and sustainability.
The flag-off at Miri City Hall was officiated by Sarawak Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, who lauded SGM for sustaining the programme for 20 years.
“‘Run for Peace’ carries a powerful message. Every individual possesses the power to create change towards a peaceful and sustainable future,” he said.
The event began in Selangor in 2005 with about 1,000 runners.
By 2019, it had expanded to 28 locations and attracted more than 115,000 participants nationwide.
This year’s edition covers 22 locations with an estimated 70,000 runners.

Lee said the run’s message aligned with Malaysia MADANI, emphasising compassion, sustainability and unity.
He also credited SGM for extending its work beyond the run through youth programmes, recycling initiatives, health talks, and environmental campaigns.
“Achieving the SDGs is not the sole responsibility of the government. Groups like SGM bridge the gap between policy and public participation,” he said.
Lee added that peace must begin within individuals before it can be nurtured at community and national level.
“Malaysia’s diversity – our cultures, languages and faiths – is one of our greatest strengths. While differences are natural, unity is a choice,” he said.
Also present were Miri Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman, Adam Yii Siew Sang, and Chia Kah Furng, representing Piasau Assemblyman, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.
Themed ‘Peace Starts with Me – Act Now for SDGs’, the run was held simultaneously across the country.
