17 made homeless in early morning fire

KUCHING: Three houses were engulfed in flames, leaving 17 people homeless, while a man suffered breathing difficulties and hypothermia after bravely attempting to salvage belongings from one of the burning homes in Kampung Siol Kandis, Petra Jaya.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department reported that the 23 years old victim, was conscious and in stable condition.

“After receiving initial treatment, including breathing assistance, he was taken to Sarawak General Hospital for further medical care,” Bomba said in a statement.

The Fire and Rescue Department was alerted to the incident at 12.32 am today and deployed firefighters from Petra Jaya, Padungan, and Batu Lintang to the scene.

“The fire affected three houses, with two completely destroyed and one sustaining 10 per cent damage,” it added.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze and ensure no further risk of reignition before concluding their operation at 2.37 am.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are still under investigation.

The victim being transported to SGH for further treatment.
