KUCHING: A total of 1,719 graduates from eight institutions under the Polytechnic and Community College (POLYCC) Sarawak Zone will receive their scrolls during the convocation ceremony at Polytechnic Kuching Sarawak (PKS) from Aug 9 to 12.

The second session today (Aug 10) saw 428 graduates from Politeknik Kuching Sarawak (PKS), Kuching Community College, Sarikei Community College, Sarikei Community College Sibu Branch, and Miri Community College.

The ceremony combines the 33rd PKS Convocation, the 9th Polytechnic METrO Betong Sarawak Convocation, and the 2025 Sarawak Community College Convocation.

Of the total graduates, 1,353 earned Diplomas and Certificates from 13 programmes at PKS, 75 from Polytechnic METrO Betong Sarawak, and 291 from six Community Colleges in the Sarawak Zone.

PKS director Mohamad Nazri Ismail said the ceremony reflects the success of the institutions in producing industry-ready graduates in line with the Higher Education Direction 2025, which aims to keep Malaysia’s higher education system relevant and competitive.

“The national framework focuses on seven key areas, including talent development, academic empowerment, internationalisation, governance, financial sustainability, and campus well-being, supported by 20 signature programmes by the Ministry of Higher Education.

“At the POLYCC level, this direction is implemented through the POLYCC Reform Plan 2025 to 2035, which integrates the Malaysia Polytechnic Transformation 2023 to 2035 and the Community College Empowerment 2024 to 2035 into a major movement to shape the future of national TVET,” he said during the ceremony today.

According to Mohamad Nazri, POLYCC graduate employability rate remained outstanding at 98.8 per cent for 2024, showing that graduates remain relevant and in high demand in the job market.

“A positive trend has also been observed, with a 40 per cent increase in SPM school leavers choosing Polytechnics and Community Colleges as their main destination after school.

“At present, POLYCC’s active student enrolment stands at 97,554, proving its large capacity to provide access to education for the people.

“ This not only reflects success in attracting new students, but also serves as strong evidence of public trust in TVET’s role as a driver of social mobility and national development,” he said.
