20 evacuated as three-foot floodwaters inundate longhouse

KANOWIT: Twenty people, including eight children, were evacuated to a temporary relief centre (PPS) after floodwaters inundated a longhouse in Nanga Baloh Ngemah last night (Jan 12).

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) Secretariat said that various rescue agencies were deployed to Rumah Suzusie Lily after being alerted to rising waters at 9.20 pm.

Upon arrival, rescuers found the longhouse submerged in floodwaters up to three feet high.

The affected residents, consisting of five families, were relocated to Dewan Serbaguna Nanga Ngungun PPS, which was officially opened at 11.30 pm to accommodate them.

The evacuees included five adult men, seven adult women, four girls, three boys, and a baby girl.

As of 4 pm today (Jan 13), water levels in Nanga Baloh Ngemah were reported to be stable.
