KUCHING: A total of 20 participants, who attended the seven-day programme and activities of the Sape Camp 2024, have graduated.
Sarawak Unity Foundation chief executive officer Datuk Aloysius J Dris said that with the conclusion of the ceremony, all participants are now officially appointed as Sarawak Unity Foundation (YPS) Sape Ambassadors.
“Now, these future leaders (participants) are officially appointed as Sarawak Unity Foundation Sape Ambassadors, joining another 15 individuals from the first batch of the same programme.
“We at Sarawak Unity Foundation are proud of your achievements, and we are equally committed to providing an exciting and unique platform for you to showcase your new talents, whether on stages across Sarawak or beyond,” he said.
He said this during his speech at the closing and graduation ceremony of Sape Camp 2024 held at Wisma Sabati, today (Dec 6).
He stressed that the launch of this closing ceremony clearly demonstrates the success of the Sape Camp 2024 in inspiring youth to empower the traditional music for the future.
“Together, we stand to honor the achievements of all participants while embracing the camp’s vision of nurturing talent and leading unity.
“Sape Camp 2024 is not merely a programme; it is a reflection of our shared mission to foster unity, preserve heritage, and develop talent,” he added.
For Sape Camp 2024, 20 participants from various communities, including Sino-Kadazan, Orang Asli, Kelabit, Iban, Bidayuh, Malay, Chinese, Sekapan, and Melanau, took part.
The seven-day programme allowed participants to deepen their skills in playing the Sape, designing and crafting their own musical instruments, and composing music.
Additionally, the programme included sessions on stage performance skills and oral communication improvement.
Aloysius expressed his hope that similar programmes could be continued in the future to perpetuate the legacy of Sape music.
“It is our hope that your music and narratives will not only inspire others but also unite and bridge differences among all Malaysians.
“I take this opportunity to thank everyone who made this camp a success,” he said.
He further stated that the programme’s success was closely tied to the encouragement and support provided by the participants’ parents.
Thus, he hopes that these young ambassadors will join their mission in promoting unity in diversity, particularly in Malaysia and Sarawak as a whole.
