KUCHING: A total of 22 out of 26 High Performing Rural Schools (HIPERS) successfully improved their School Average Grade (GPS) in the 2023 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

Deputy director of Yayasan Sarawak, Watson Chunggat Leonard Doo, stated that this was a significant improvement compared to SPM 2022, where only 12 schools showed an increase in their GPS.

“This is a positive achievement through the intervention measures by Yayasan Sarawak, fully supported by the commitment and cooperation of school teachers who play a crucial role in ensuring their students’ success.

“Therefore, I would like to extend my highest appreciation and gratitude to all teachers in HIPERS secondary schools for your dedication and hard work,” he said.

He said this in his speech while representing the director of Yayasan Sarawak, Datuk Mersal Abang Rosli, at the MyUniversityMyChoice programme held at Hikmah Exchange Centre on Friday.

Meanwhile, Watson added that 4,850 HIPERS students were celebrated during the MyUniversityMyChoice programme.

Watson said the programme was held in eight locations: Kuching, Sri Aman, Mukah, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri, Limbang, and Lawas.

“This is a sign of our commitment at Yayasan Sarawak in appreciating all of you for your hard work in preparing for the 2024 SPM examination.

“HIPERS has become an essential platform for schools to enhance their performance, with programmes and activities carefully planned for them,” he said.

At the same time, Watson also assured that all Sarawakian students would receive sponsorship from Yayasan Sarawak if they further their studies at Yayasan Sarawak-affiliated institutions, namely Swinburne, Curtin, UTS, KLT, i-CATS, and CENTEXS.

“In addition, they will also receive an initial assistance grant of RM1,000 for their admission into our institutions and a free one-month English Enhancement Programme at any of our institutions, along with a RM300 allowance,” he said.
