MIRI: The 7th Miri City Mayor’s Awards delivered a clear signal on Sunday night that excellence and civic leadership remain central to the city’s development agenda.
Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang recognised 22 exceptional individuals and organisations whose contributions continue to elevate Miri’s social, cultural and economic standing.
Held at a leading hotel in the city, among the dignitaries who attended were Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (Tourism) Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching Dr Abdullah Zulkifli, Deputy Mayor of Miri City Ariffin Mohamad, Miri Resident Galong Luang, acting City Secretary Abdul Rahman Taupek and Miri District Officer Siti Rohanie Yusof.
A major highlight of the evening was the announcement of Datuk Sri Law Kiu King as the recipient of the prestigious Grand Miri City Mayor’s Award 2025. The honour recognises his longstanding contributions, strategic vision and enduring impact on Miri’s growth.
Yii said the award reflects the city’s appreciation for leaders who have consistently demonstrated their commitment to advance Miri’s development trajectory.
In his address, Yii noted the awards’ expanding relevance since their establishment in 2018. This year’s 46 nominations marked a meaningful rise, signalling the community’s heightened commitment to recognising impactful work across sectors.
From these nominations, 22 recipients were selected using criteria aligned with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals, underscoring the city’s focus on sustainable, forward-looking development.
Another defining moment was the introduction of a new posthumous category under the Miri City Mayor’s Special Award 2025.
Created to honour individuals whose pioneering roles shaped Miri’s early foundations, the award ensures that their legacy remains part of the city’s collective memory and continues to inspire future efforts.
Awards were presented across key sectors, including environment, tourism promotion, education, youth and culture, public health, media and social media, special awards and the Grand Mayor’s Award.
Yii praised nominators for taking the initiative to spotlight exceptional achievements, emphasising that the growing number of submissions reflects a maturing culture of civic recognition.
