MIRI: Twenty-two organisations and institutions in the Pujut constituency have received a total of RM70,000 in allocations under the Minor Rural Project (MRP).

Pujut state assemblyman, Adam Yii Siew Sang, said the recipients included community associations, schools, religious bodies, sports clubs and welfare organisations serving the Pujut area and the wider Miri division.

He said the funding was aimed at supporting grassroots programmes, welfare initiatives and local social development, while strengthening social cohesion and community well-being.

“I hope the allocations will be put to good use in supporting community-based activities and contributing to the overall development of the Pujut constituency,” he said at the grant presentation ceremony here on Saturday (Jan 24).

Yii, who is also the Mayor of Miri City, also tabled an update on the implementation of the MRP for 2025.

He said a total of 381 organisations had received financial assistance, covering 201 activities across the religious, educational and community sectors.

Of the total recipients, he said 17 were religious organisations, 15 were schools and 148 were non-governmental organisations and community associations.

Separately, Yii addressed recent flooding incidents affecting several areas in Miri, attributing them to a combination of factors including unusually heavy rainfall, limited drainage capacity, blocked drains, and tidal surges in low-lying areas.

He said some locations experienced tidal flooding even without rainfall, particularly areas situated near rivers and at lower elevations.

While rainfall intensity, tidal movements and river water levels were beyond the control of local authorities, he stressed that the condition and maintenance of drainage infrastructure were issues that required immediate and sustained attention.

He said the Engineering Department of Miri City Council had been instructed to ensure that drainage systems were kept clear and fully operational to mitigate the risk of flash floods.
