MIRI:  Police issued 22 summonses during an overnight motorcycle enforcement operation in the city following public complaints over disruptive riding and traffic obstruction.

The operation, mounted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters, was carried out from 11 pm on Thursday until 2.30 am on Friday at several identified hotspots, including Jalan Piasau, Jalan Miri Bypass, Jalan Marina and Jalan Tanjong Lobang.

Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the targeted operation was launched in response to reports from residents and road users over unsafe motorcycle activity that posed risks to traffic flow and public order, particularly during late-night hours.

A total of 17 individuals were checked, comprising 15 men and two women, along with 15 motorcycles.

Police detected multiple offences during the operation, including riding without a valid driving licence, unauthorised structural modifications to motorcycles, modified exhaust systems, absence of side mirrors, failure to display proper registration numbers, use of “fancy” number plates and other technical violations linked to illegal vehicle alterations.

Mohd Farhan said such offences not only breach traffic laws but also endanger riders and other road users, while excessive noise from modified exhausts undermines community peace.

He urged all road users to comply strictly with traffic regulations, practise responsible riding and driving, and steer clear of illegal street racing or road gang activities.

Vehicle owners were also reminded not to modify their motorcycles beyond permitted specifications or in ways that contravene the law and cause public nuisance.

He said the police would continue to conduct regular and focused enforcement operations to uphold road safety and safeguard public wellbeing across the district.
