BELAGA: Twenty-three residents lost their homes and belongings when a morning fire gutted a 19-door workers’ quarters at a plantation estate in Murum, leaving them with only the clothes on their backs.
The blaze, which broke out around 10am yesterday (Jun 10), destroyed the wooden structure completely.
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported as the residents from five families managed to flee to safety
According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), firefighters from Belaga station were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call.
However, it took them nearly three hours to reach the remote location — some 125km away — via plantation routes.
Firefighters arrived at 1.58 pm to find the quarters already engulfed in flames. They quickly brought the blaze under control and carried out overhaul works to prevent any potential reignition.
The team wrapped up the operation at 2.10 pm.
The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
