KUCHING: Flood conditions are expected to disrupt the opening of the 2026 school session tomorrow, with 26 schools across Sarawak unable to operate.
State Education Department (JPNS) director Omar Mahli said the affected schools were identified through the Flood-Affected School Operability Survey conducted under the department.
He stated that all 26 schools fall under the supervision of three District Education Offices (PPD), namely Daro, Selangau and Tatau/Sebauh.
Of the total, 19 schools are located in the Tatau/Sebauh district.
These are SJK(C) Chung Hua Tatau, SJK(C) Chung San, SK Bukit Mawang, SK Hermanus Assan, SK Kuala Binyo, SK Kuala Kebulu, SK Kuala Muput, SK Kuala Sigu, SK Labang, SK Sungai Penyarai, SK Sungai Tau, SK Pandan, SK Rumah Tayai, SK Sebauh, SK Sungai Bukit Balai, SK Sungai Genaan, SK Sungai Sebungan, SK Sungai Sengian and SK Sungai Bagian.
“All these schools are unable to operate as their school compounds are flooded, access roads to the schools have been cut off by floodwaters, and the surrounding areas remain inundated,” he said when contacted.
Omar shared that four schools in Selangau are also affected, namely SK St Mark, SK Nanga Selangau, SK Kuala Lemai and SK Ulu Sungai Arip.
“These schools cannot operate because floodwaters have entered classrooms and school compounds, posing safety risks,” he said.
In Daro, he said three affected schools are SK Kampung Pangtray, SK Ok Selair and SJK(C) Chung Hua as school areas, nearby villages and access routes remain flooded.
Meanwhile, Omar said eight primary schools have been converted into temporary evacuation centres (PPS), including SK Bukit Arip in Selangau.
He added that the remaining seven schools serving as PPS are located in Serian, namely SJK(C) Chung Hua Batu 29, SK Krusen, SK Pangkalan Sorah, SK St Peter, SK Tanah Merah, SK Tanah Puteh and SK Tebakang.
