KUCHING: Twenty-eight luxury vehicles lost their shine after being seized by the Sarawak Road Transport Department (RTD) during ‘Ops Kenderaan Mewah’ conducted statewide over the past month.
Once flaunted as symbols of prestige, the vehicles were confiscated following inspections that revealed blatant violations — including expired road tax and the absence of valid insurance — both offences under the Road Transport Act 1987.
The Sarawak RTD said such offences should never occur, especially among vehicles associated with wealth and status.
Whether due to negligence, forgetfulness, or deliberate disregard, there are no excuses.
“Many luxury vehicles in Sarawak are still believed to be operating without renewed road tax and insurance, despite being driven freely on the roads.
“This operation will continue as we believe the actual number of vehicles committing such offences is likely to be higher than those seized so far,” the department said.
Vehicle owners, particularly those with luxury cars, should take road tax and insurance renewal seriously as it is not only a legal obligation but also a matter of personal and public safety.
Enforcement operations will continue and stern action will be taken against those who flout the law, RTD warned.
