MIRI: The Sarawak Immigration Department has arrested 29 individuals of various nationalities following a raid at an entertainment centre in Niah yesterday (June 22).
Acting on intelligence, the department’s Special Task Force (PTK) launched the operation codenamed Ops Gegar on the premises suspected of employing undocumented foreign workers.
The team inspected a total of 64 individuals for their documentation and of the figure, 29 foreigners – 19 men and 10 women – were taken into custody for working without valid documents and misusing their permits.
All the detainees are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963.
The Sarawak Immigration Department said such an operation aimed to curb illegal employment activities and uphold immigration laws.
“Employing foreign workers without going through legal channels is not only illegal but can also lead to various negative implications including exploitation and security issues,” the department said.
It also reminded business operators to always adhere to the law when hiring foreign workers.
“Cooperation from all quarters is crucial in preserving public order and ensuring the rule of law is upheld,”
