A total of 30 out of 45 districts in Sarawak are now equipped with at least one sports complex under the state government’s “One District, One Sports Complex” initiative.

Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the achievement represented approximately 67 per cent of the ministry’s target to improve access to sports facilities throughout Sarawak.

He said the proposed Permyjaya Sports Hub project in Miri, recently approved with an allocation of RM9 million, is expected to begin in the third quarter of this year and be completed by 2029.

“Within the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) period, my ministry in collaboration and strategic partnership with regional development agencies is planning to develop more sports complexes in other districts which upon completion is expected to engage the local and its surrounding communities towards contributing to Sarawak’s social and economic productivity,” he said in his ministerial winding-up speech at the august House today (May 19).

Abdul Karim said the ministry is currently entrusted with three People’s Projects involving a total allocation of RM20.25 million.

Among them is the Proposed Sport Facilities for Bau District – Bau Sports Arena project, which is scheduled for completion this month.

He added that the Sarawak Public Works Department (PWD) is working closely with relevant agencies to expedite the project completion.
