SIBU: A sweeping immigration operation at timber factories around the district saw 30 foreigners detained for various offences, with some believed to be working without valid passes or permits.

The operation, codenamed ‘Ops Sapu’, was held yesterday (Sept 23) by the Sarawak Immigration Department’s Security and Enforcement Monitoring Unit (UPKP) with support from the Sibu Immigration Enforcement Unit.

Of those detained, 21 are men and nine are women. They are now being probed under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for failing to produce valid documents to remain in Malaysia.

In a further blow to errant employers, immigration officers also slapped companies with two witness summonses on suspicion of employing undocumented workers.

The department said enforcement efforts will continue from time to time to ensure no party exploits the system.

It urged the public to play its part by channelling information on undocumented migrants to protect the country’s security and sovereignty.
