KUCHING: Some 300 officers from the State Immigration Department took part in the ‘Corruption Free Pledge’ ceremony held at the State Library here, yesterday.

Director General of Immigration, Dato’ Seri Mustafar Ali hoped that the 300 officers will cause a rippling effect through the others by taking the pledge. In his speech at the function, Mustafar said that while it was important for officers not to accept bribes, it was also important for members of the public not to offer them bribes as well.

“If anyone tries to bribe an Immigration officer, they will be caught. “This pledge is more than just a programme as it is a promise made that our officers will not ask for bribes or accept them.

“We do our best to serve the public, but there are some who try to cut corners by bribing,” he said. He also reminded Immigration officers of their duties which go beyond just stamping passports.

“We are the frontliners and we are the ones responsible for who goes in and out of this country which also affects national security,” he said. Also present during the event were state Immigration director, Ken Leben and Mattson Attang Achun from the state Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
