KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) is pressing ahead with its commitment to bring science and technology learning to rural and remote communities through the Kembara Sains Borneo (KSB) 2025 programme.

Minister Chang Lih Kang said this year’s initiative under the umbrella of National Science Week will reach 30 selected schools in Sabah and Sarawak, benefitting an estimated 30,000 students.

“Of the 30 schools, 14 are in Sarawak and 16 in Sabah,” he told reporters after officiating the launch of National Science Week 2025 at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Samarahan Campus last night (May 4).

Unlike a typical one-off campaign, KSB 2025 will span six months and wrap up by year’s end. The programme is spearheaded by the National Science Centre (PSN) in partnership with strategic collaborators and is supported by main sponsor Yayasan Mr. DIY.

In his speech, Chang explained that the initiative adopts a mobile, hands-on approach to deliver science, technology, and innovation (STI) content directly to students.

“KSB 2025 begins in Kota Samarahan and will travel to 14 schools across Sarawak, ending in Julau. It will then proceed to 16 schools in Sabah, starting in Tawau and concluding in Lahad Datu,” he said.

He added that the PSN team will travel with a mobile exhibition bus and van squad, offering interactive exhibits and engaging STI activities tailored to young learners in underserved areas.

Chang also outlined three key components of this year’s National Science Week which is now in its eighth edition since its launch in 2018.

“The first is the National Science Week Carnival 2025, to be held physically across six zones, with the first leg in Kuching. Second, the National Science Week Expedition, which will bring STI programmes like KSB and Rehlah Sains to rural schools.

“Third is the National Science Week Sponsorship Initiative, designed to support agencies and stakeholders in cultivating a culture of STI,” he said.

This year’s theme, “Merakyatkan Sains, Menginsankan Teknologi, Mengarusperdanakan Inovasi”, reflects the goal of making science inclusive, humanising technology, and mainstreaming innovation.

MOSTI is targeting over 300,000 participants through more than 50 activities nationwide, ensuring the initiative’s reach and relevance across all segments of society.
