31 arrested in 29 illegal gambling raids

KUCHING: The state police continued its crackdown on illegal gambling activities with the arrest of more illegal lottery and cyber gambling reload operators after a week-long raids, said State CID chief, SAC Dato’ Dev kumar. He disclosed that the state police conducted 29 successful gambling raids which resulted in the arrest of 31 individuals.

Twenty-six of the raids were against illegal lottery activities. The raids were conducted by teams from CID HQs and district CIDs. CID HQs conducted five raids in Kuching and Padawan while CID Kuching conducted four raids, Miri CID (4), Sibu (3), Padawan (3), Bintulu (3) with one raid each in Kota Samarahan, Betong, Sarikei, Mukah, Limbang, Marudi and Lawas.

Dev said the 26 illegal lottery raids resulted in the arrest of 28 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM7,951. Mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationery were also seized.

‘Apart from illegal lottery raids, three raids were conducted at counters offering cyber gambling reload services in Mukah, Limbang and Lawas which resulted in the arrest of three men and seizure of six mobile phones used for cyber gambling reload. Cash amounting to RM22,165 was also seized from a raid in Mukah. Of the 31 arrestees, 24 were males while the rest were females.

They were aged between 17 and 57 years. Two of those arrested were foreigners,” he added. All those arrested are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act, 1953.
