34 foreigners flushed out in ‘Ops Sapu’ blitz

SIBU: Immigration enforcement officers rounded up 34 foreign nationals during surprise raids yesterday (Oct 27), tightening the net on undocumented migrants in the district.

Backed by 18 members of its Special Task Force, the Sarawak Immigration Department launched the early morning operation, codenamed ‘Ops Sapu’, at two different locations.

The objective of such an operation was to tighten enforcement and curb the influx of illegal migrants in Sibu.

A total of 50 individuals were screened and of the figure, 34 were taken into custody for various immigration offences.

The detainees are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963.

The department warned that its enforcement drive will not slow down as it will be conducted from time to time to uphold national security and sovereignty.
