BINTULU: The Sarawak Immigration Department intensified its enforcement today by detaining 35 undocumented foreigners in separate raids and shutting down a suspected online gambling operation.
Acting on intelligence about suspicious activities across multiple locations, the coordinated efforts, codenamed ‘Ops Sapu’ and ‘Ops Gegar’, involved 32 officers from the Sibu, Miri and Bintulu Enforcement Units.
During ‘Ops Sapu’ at 2:30 am, officers raided a workers’ quarters near a timber processing site, arresting nine individuals – six men and three women.
A second raid on a house in a forested area resulted in 23 more foreigners – 13 men and 10 women – being detained.
Separately, ‘Ops Gegar’ at 5:00 am targeted a three-storey building believed to operate as a calling centre for online gambling.
Three foreigners were arrested at the site.
All suspects, who failed to produce valid travel documents, were taken to the detention depot for further investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/63.
The department said the operations not only tackled the influx of illegal immigrants but also struck a blow against organised cybercrime threatening national security and the economy.
