KUCHING: A man was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment and fined RM3,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here today (Sept 21) for possessing 388 images of child sexual abuse material on his computer.
Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali meted out the sentence to 41-year-old Chan Khin See after he pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act (SOACA) 2017.
The court ordered the prison term to take effect from the date of conviction today (Sept 21).
Chan was also ordered to undergo police supervision for one year after completing his sentence.
Under Section 10 of the Act, a person convicted of the offence is liable to imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.
The offence was committed at about 12.30am on Sept 15 at a house in Taman Malihah, Jalan Matang.
The court heard that Chan was found possessing sexual abuse material stored on a custom-built desktop computer during a police operation dubbed “Ops Pedo PDRM”.
A police team led by the complainant, a police officer, arrested Chan at the house following intelligence gathered by the Malaysia Internet Crimes Against Children (MICAC) under the Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Bukit Aman.
Investigations found that 388 images of child sexual abuse material were stored on Chan’s computer.
The prosecution was conducted by prosecution officer Inspector Siti Radhiah Abdul Rahman, while the accused was unrepresented
