ROME: A 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the southern Italian city of Naples on Monday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
There were initially no reports of damage or casualties following the quake, according to authorities.
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said the main quake was registered at around 4.55 am (0255 GMT).
It was preceded by a series of weaker tremors, with around 40 aftershocks recorded according to the ANSA news agency.
The epicentre was in the Phlegrean Fields, a volcano located just west of the city in the Campania region.
The region has been hit by numerous tremors in recent months, including a 4.6-magnitude earthquake in June.
Authorities have issued a yellow alert, calling on the population to exercise caution.
The Phlegrean Fields is a supervolcano, a term referring to volcanoes characterised by large magma chambers that can explode with enormous violence. – BERNAMA-dpa
