KUCHING: A total of 40 inmates of Puncak Borneo Henry Gurney School and Kuching Prisons received course certificates yesterday at Auditorium Sri Sarawak at Jln Puncak Borneo near here.

Prisons managing director from Malaysia Prisons Headquarters KP Abd Kadir Rais said the inmates had completed basic courses on iron works and installation and servicing of air-conditioners.

“Although the courses were short – just two days – the theoretical knowledge and skills gained through practice will have a long-term impact on the lives of the participants if they take steps towards changing their lives after their release,” he said.

According to Abd Kadir, what the inmates learned during the courses had high demand in a developing country like Malaysia.

He was glad that the courses were able to attract the inmates although they were short.

This interest in the courses would directly facilitate the rehabilitation of the inmates under the Prisoners Rehabilitation Programme, he said.

“It is what we want as they will gain true recovery and get accepted by their communities following their return to the mainstream society,” he said.

Abd Kadir said it was also the hope of the department that the convicts would later choose a new way of life in order to be useful members of  the society.

“I hope that the inmates will use their skills to find new jobs after their release,” he said.
