SHANGHAI: Sarawak has so far achieved 5,900 megawatts (MW) of power generation, demonstrating the state’s need to generate just over 4,000MW more to reach 10 gigawatts (GW) by 2030.
Group chief executive officer of Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Datuk Sharbini Suhaili said the current achievement reflects the company’s continued efforts to become a regional leader in renewable energy.
“Today, we have about 5,900MW of power capacity. Therefore, by 2030, we need to develop several more gigawatts to achieve our 10GW target,” he said.
“This effort aligns with our aspiration to maintain SEB’s position as a major renewable energy leader in the region, while ensuring 60 per cent of our power generation comes from renewable sources in our energy mix,” he said in a TVS report following his attendance at the International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Conference and Exhibition (SNEC PV Expo), here, yesterday (June 10).
The event witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, China Three Gorges International Ltd (CTGI), and Shanghai Electric Power T&D Group Co. Ltd.
Sharbini said that the MoU facilitates a joint study by the two Chinese companies to explore developing a floating solar project at the Bakun Hydropower Plant.
“Through this solar energy collaboration, we aim to add approximately 1,500MW of solar capacity by 2030,” he said.
“This partnership represents a crucial initiative toward achieving our renewable energy targets,” he added.
Sharbini said that SEB has received numerous solar cooperation proposals from international companies, including CTGI and Shanghai Electric Power T&D Group Co. Ltd.
He expressed confidence that both companies’ proven expertise and track record in solar development would ensure successful energy cooperation in Sarawak.
