KAPIT: A total of 45 individuals were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs after a 14-door block of workers’ quarters at an oil palm plantation in Sungai Asap, Belaga, was completely destroyed by fire yesterday (Apr 10).
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bombs) said the department received an emergency call at 4.06 pm.
Despite efforts to reach the scene as quickly as possible, a team from the Belaga fire station only arrived more than two hours later at 6.40 pm, as the location was 112km away and could only be accessed via logging roads.
“No firefighting action was taken as the fire had already been completely extinguished upon arrival.
“The fire involved one block of 14-door workers’ quarters made of non-permanent structures and was 100 per cent destroyed,” Bomba said in a statement today.
They added that the fire only affected Block B, while Block A was not impacted.
“All 45 occupants, comprising both citizens and non-citizens, managed to escape safely and no injuries were reported,” they said.
