SIBU: A total of 49 cancer and cerebral palsy patients received some financial assistance in the form of red packets, which was presented by local Member of Parliament Oscar Ling at Kim Guong Drug Store, Jalan Central Road here on Saturday.

Of the total number of beneficiaries, 29 cancer patients are from Paediatric Oncology ward of Sibu General Hospital and the rest are cerebral palsy patients from Wishesland Sibu.

Speaking to Sarawak Tribune, Ling said, the financial aid of RM500 each was contributed by a sponsor, in conjunction with the coming festive Chinese New Year.

These groups, he pointed out, really need attention, especially cerebral palsy patients normally being sidelined by the community.

He highlighted the need to bring them back to the community by helping them with physiotherapy to regain their normal daily function.

Adding on, he stated In the future, they would be assisted to be financially independent by coming out to work to earn their own living.

“For the cancer patients after undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, even the cancer surgery, some of them might have difficulty in daily function. So I think our society needs to understand them and how to accept them back to normal society. The cancer-stricken, especially children mostly can be cured,” he said.

Also present were former Bukit Assek assemblywoman, Irene Chang and Ling’s special assistant, Irene Wong.
