LAWAS: A total of 500 students and parents attended the state-level briefing programme (Program Taklimat Minda) held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Merapok here yesterday.

The programme was organised by the State Information Department.

Industrial and Entrepreneur Development, Trade and Investment Minister, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan who graced the programme said drugs were the country’s number one enemy and they could undermine the country’s social and economic development.

“Based on the statistics issued by the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), a total of 26,688 drug addicts were recorded in Malaysia in 2015 and out of this figure, only 658 drug addicts were recorded in Sarawak.

“If we refer to the current situation where the problem of drug abuse is spreading among the community, it is imperative that we take a proactive action to assist the authorities such as the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and AADK to combat this menace from time to time,” said the Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment.

He urged people who know of those involved in drugs not to alienate them, but instead to get close to them and provide help and moral support to them.

At the event, Tengah announced a contribution of RM50,000 for the school to implement activities.

Also present were Limbang Resident, Datu Maria Hasnan, Lawas District Officer, Hussaini Hakim, SMK Merapok Principal, Yakub Jai and Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) President, Kadir Bayan.
