SIBU: Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee believes that Sibu District is able to administer 5,000 doses of vaccine daily, beginning July.

According to him, this would see more residents vaccinated in an effort to reach the targeted 70 per cent or 232,528 residents vaccinated by the end of August to achieve herd immunity.

“We will increase the target to 7,000 doses per day in August when many vaccination centres (PPV) are operating by then.

“Hopefully, we can reduce the number of Covid-19 cases in our country so that we can live normally as before,” he said at the Agape Centre PPV here on Tuesday (June 29).

However, Dr Annuar pointed out that this target also depended on the supply of vaccines from the federal government.

“If we are given the supplies as promised and they also arrive on time, then there is no problem for us to achieve herd immunity by the end of August or September at the latest.

“We need to speed up the vaccination rate because that is the only way for us to fight this deadly virus.”

Speaking about the industrial PPV at University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS), the Nangka assemblyman said the centre had vaccinated a total of 1,000 people since it started operating on Monday (June 28).

At the same time, Dr Annuar also reminded all Sibu residents, whether they have been vaccinated or not, to continue to adhere to standard operating procedures, and stay at home if they have no important business to attend to.
