SIBU: Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek distributed 504 food baskets to residents of longhouses in the Sungai Salim area on Sunday (March 23).

The aid was provided to those affected by floods caused by the high tide phenomenon since last Friday.

The food assistance was channelled through the Sibu Welfare Department (JKM) as an immediate measure to ensure the basic needs of flood victims were met.

Ten affected longhouses received the aid: Rh Monica, Rh Mary, Rh Mamat, Rh Kiding, Rh Matan, Rh Ngipa, Rh Mahathen, Rh Dempi, Rh Lucy Sagai, and Rh Dorothy.

The food distribution was carried out using lorries, while residents also used boats to reach designated distribution points, ensuring aid delivery despite the challenging flood conditions.

Chieng expressed sympathy for the residents whose homes were inundated, with floodwaters reaching up to one foot in several areas.

As a precaution, he advised villagers to remain vigilant due to unpredictable weather and the risk of dangerous animals, such as snakes, that might emerge due to the flooding.
