BATANG AI: Sarawak’s commitment to renewable energy took a significant step forward with the official commencement of power generation from the Batang Ai Floating Solar Project.
Spanning an impressive 190 hectares of the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) reservoir, this 50MW floating solar farm is now connected to Sarawak’s power grid.
“The plant will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2025, marking four decades of providing reliable, renewable energy to Sarawak,” Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) said in a Facebook post.
The floating solar farm represents a crucial addition to the Batang Ai HEP, Sarawak’s pioneering hydroelectric plant, which has been operational since its commissioning in 1985.
This project holds the distinction of being Sarawak’s inaugural Large-Scale Solar (LSS) installation and the largest floating solar facility in Malaysia.
“This project is a crucial step towards Sarawak’s goal of achieving a low-carbon economy,” it added.
The integration of hydroelectric and solar power within this scheme underscores Sarawak Energy’s dedication to diversifying its energy mix and enhancing energy security for the region.
