KUCHING: A total of seven teachers recruited through the Sarawak Special Teacher Intake initiative have resigned.

Sarawak education director Omar Mahli said, in addition, 51 others did not report for duty.

“The main reasons for teachers not reporting or resigning included being offered other jobs, declining their placement, and personal issues,” he said when contacted by Sarawak Tribune on Tuesday (Nov 18).

According to him, as of November 2025, Sarawak has received a total of 1,219 teachers through the Sarawak Special Teacher Intake initiative.

He added that out of this number, 957 were placed in primary schools and 262 in secondary schools.

Omar also said that teacher placements as of November 2025 have successfully narrowed the gap in both primary and secondary schools, achieving a placement rate of 98.59 per cent.

Earlier, the Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that in nearly three years, almost 53,000 new teachers have been appointed, with school placement rates nationwide reaching the highest level of over 98 per cent.

She emphasised that these figures were not just numbers but a reflection of the MADANI Government’s commitment to providing the best for the nation’s education.

“Among the main issues I have focused on since joining the Ministry of Education is the shortage of teachers.

“Thanks to the Education Service Commission for their significant collaboration in addressing this issue,” she said.
