KUCHING: An overnight immigration operation across the city resulted in 59 Indonesians being detained, including 11 men suspected of carrying out online gambling activities.
The arrests were made during ‘Ops Sapu’, conducted by the Kuching Immigration Enforcement Division on Sept 12 and 13.
The Sarawak Immigration Department said the operation, which began at 10pm and ended at 4.30am, was conducted following public complaints and intelligence gathered by its enforcement division.
A total of 92 people were screened at three locations, with 59 Indonesians held for suspected immigration offences.
“At the first location, officers detained 11 Indonesian men in a terrace house at Jalan Chong Kiun Kong, Kenyalang Park.
“The premises was suspected of being used to conduct online gambling activities involving foreigners.
“Officers also seized two Indonesian passports, five computers, five laptops and 12 phones,” the department said.
The operation continued at a workers’ quarters at a construction site along Jalan Saradise, where 46 Indonesians — 38 men and eight women — were detained after all 46 occupants were screened.
Immigration officers also seized 28 Indonesian passports to assist investigations.
At the final location, 35 people were inspected at a construction workers’ quarters along Jalan Dogan, Batu Kawa, with two Indonesian men arrested for suspected immigration offences.
The detainees are being investigated under Sections 6(1)(c) and 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.
The department said it would continue conducting targeted enforcement operations based on intelligence and public complaints to ensure compliance with immigration laws.
