6 suspects arrested for armed robberies on grocery stores

KUCHING: Six men aged between 18 and 25 years were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the armed robbery cases involving grocery stores in the city. 

Kuching District police chief, ACP Ng Ah Lek said that the arrests were made at different locations around the city with cooperation of personnel from the Crime Investigation Department. 

“The suspects were arrested in connection with armed robbery cases at Jalan Satok and Jalan Matang here.   

“They were also suspected to be involved in armed robbery cases in Padawan and Kota Samarahan,” he said, adding that all the suspects are still under remand for investigation under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for robbery.

He said this during a press conference after the IPD Kuching Monthly Assembly at its office at Jalan Simpang Tiga here, yesterday.

“Two of them were tested positive with drugs when urine test was conducted on them. 

“They committed the robbery between 2am and 6am in the morning between the end of July and this month. They came to the shops using full face helmets and demanded money from the cashiers,” he told. 

He said with the arrests, it is hoped the armed robbery cases involving grocery stores in the city and nearby districts have been solved. 

Meanwhile, earlier on ACP Ng revealed that the crime index for the city from January 2018 to July 2018 showed a decrease of 134 cases from the same period last year. 

“For violent crime, the number of cases dropped 107 cases for this year compared to the same period last year while property crimes dropped 117 cases,” he disclosed. 

He added that under the recently Ops Khas Samseng Jalanan from August 1 until August 24, a total of 36 operations were conducted in the city. 

“A total of 1,110 summones were issued for various traffic offences, with six arrests made under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and another two for drug possesion. 

“During the 36 operations, a total of 1,313 vehicles were checked and 40 motorcycles seized under Section 60 (1) Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.
